The Middle East

Hope and despair in Bahrain.

The convulsions of the ”Arabic spring” swept eastwards from Tunisia and reached many countries. The small kingdom of Bahrain, positioned in the oil-rich Middle East and functioning as a base for the US Fifth fleet, makes it strategically important. The revolt against the ruling Al Khalifa family with King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa as a head figure started February 14, 2011. The epicenter of the uprising was the Pearl Roundabout in the middle of the capital Manama. The security forces of the regime, with the help of Saudi military personnel brutally quelled the demonstrations and killing many. The Pearl Roundabout has now been demolished but the demonstrations continue.
