Libyan uprising 2011

The uprising started in Benghazi february 17th 2011. Demonstrators protesting the regime of Gadaffi were fired upon and many were killed. The situation quickly escalated into a civil war that spread all over the country. Large parts of the civilian society took up arms to fight Gadaffi´s forces and with support from NATO warplanes the regime was finally overthrown. On october 20th Gadaffi was killed and three days later the transitional council in Benghazi declared Libya liberated.

However, infighting over post-Gadaffi powers started more or less immediately between the different militias and the country is again desceninding into darkness.
